Ready to go!
Thursday, our day was spent getting registered and finding classes. Grayson High was, well, an organized zoo at least. Many hugs in the halls on the way to the homeroom trailer (Grayson only has 32 trailers this year). The homerooms are assigned by last name, so everybody in Cori's homeroom has a name between Mitchell and Muir. Weird, but I guess it works if all you're doing is accounting for who's present.
Her first class is right out the door and up the stairs, so that was good. Her locker combination doesn't work and it is on the top floor of the main building, so probably won't be using it anyway as it is teeny tiny and she must share it with another girl.
Of all her friends that we ran into in the halls, they had NO classes together. We're optimistic that perhaps this year, we'll just make some new friends ...
No pictures of Cori as it is very "not cool" for mothers to be photographing her children in the halls of Grayson High.
Cooper Elementary has opened up the doors in its new building. The school is only 3 years old and is named after our friend Steven Starling's grandfather on his mother's side. Upon the dedication of the dedication of the school, the Coopers made a presentation to the school of a beautiful montage of historic photos of W.J. which has always hung in the front hall. When making the new additions to the school, the media center was relocated and a special place of honor was created for this presentation. It was lit and is now one of the main focuses when entering the school. Miss Ann would be so proud!
When it opened the doors 3 years ago, they already had 18 trailers in the back. Last year was incredibly hard to envision as one end of the school was being expanded and the other end had around 40 trailers for the 4th grade. The plans were to build a 2 story addition, but it ended up being 3 and you got it, the 5th grade is on the 3rd floor. We did a bit of a tour of the new space - the "media center" (aka the library in my day) is huge! Robin was very excited to see all the room that the morning news crew will have as she is to be the weather girl during the first part of the year.
Each morning, she will come in, run up 3 flights of steps to put her bookbag up, run down 3 flights of steps do the media center's news room and give the day's weather for all of the students via broadcast hook up. Very cool, but we'll have to make sure the spinach is out of her teeth before we go on camera.
She's very excited that she will be in the class with one of her very favorite friends, Ore. She, Ore and Jasmine, along with their friend Julia , have been together for years, but this year the group did not all get in the same class. They'll probably see each other in focus groups and such, but not in homeroom.
Robin's very excited to begin school on Monday. She likes her new homeroom teacher who seems to have a ready smile, but a backbone of steel. Much needed for handling pre-pubscent dramas of 5th grade I would imagine.
And Cori is ready, too, I think. Although she has kept up with her friends through MySpace and such throughout the summer, she seems ready to get back to work at the high school experiences. Each new year is an opportunity to reinvent yourself and she's just naturally been doing a bit of metamorphosis this summer. Oh, she's still a big goof, that's what we love about her - but we seemed to have gotten our loving Cori back this summer - the patient one who rarely gets angry at the world. So glad she came back to live with us!
